Navajo Ministries

Jim and Kay Baker are with Navajo Ministries in Farmington, New Mexico, just northeast of the Navajo Nation in the Four Corners Area.  The Bakers have two grown children who are both married and live in the Farmington area. They have two grandchildren. Breann, born to Lisa, went home to be with Jesus on June 8, 2006.  She was three years old and suffered from a genetic disease call Neimann-Pick.  Seattle, born to David, was born April 28, 2004, and continues to be a joy to the family.

The Navajo Nation is home to the largest tribe of Native Americans in the country. This land located in parts of three states in the Southwest is a desolate desert land where poverty abounds.  Unemployment is nearly 50% of the 250,000 population. The school drop out rate is also high, and alcohol and drugs are constant problems.

The Bakers moved to Farmington in 1975 to serve as house parents to children from broken homes. During their 12 years in that capacity, they were “mom and dad” to thirty-five children. They received the Humanitarian of the Year award from the Farmington Chamber of Commerce in January of 2002. This was the first time the award was given to a couple. Since 1987, Jim has served as President of Navajo Missions (now known as Navajo Ministries).

The varied ministries include The Four Corners Home for children, KNMI Radio, Counseling Center, and Cross-Cultural Ministry.  He also hosts a daily interview program on KNMI called Four Corners Spotlight.  Kay serves as Director of Childcare Administration, caring for the many files and scheduling necessary for the Children’s Home.

Navajo Ministries continues to provide hope and restoration to families in the Four Corners area. Exciting growth is on the horizon with plans underway to construct a Navajo Cultural Center, which will celebrate the Navajo people, their traditions, their crafts, and their heritage.
